Remote and far enough away to be a true respite from the outside world, the city of Ely is so much more than a fabulous nature destination in northern Minnesota. It's true that visitors flock to Ely to experience the thrill of outdoor destinations such as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Ely itself is a cultural hub and the home to a spectacular amount of American history.
Ely is located in the upper northeast corner of the state of Minnesota in St. Louis County. The population is small with approximately 3,500 year round residents. Located in the heart of the Vermilion Iron Range, Ely is commonly considered to be the gateway to the extraordinary Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Ely, MN is approximately 100 miles north of Duluth and two hundred and fifty miles north of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Nature lovers everywhere are familiar with Ely as a phenomenal place to go to view wildlife of all shapes, sizes and species. Ely is home to the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area offers a refuge for countless species of wildlife such as moose, elk, deer, beavers, the occasional black bear, osprey, bald eagles and many other species of waterfowl. Much of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is accessible only by canoe, making it some of the most peaceful terrain in North America.
Every year in late July, Ely holds its annual Blueberry Fest. Members of the Ojibwe tribe once inhabited these lands and legend has it that they were drawn to the area due to the abundance of blueberries. French and European settlers moved into the area in search of pelts and other wealth. Iron ore, lumber and paper production became integral parts of the economic livelihood of many residents in this part of northern Minnesota. As society moved into the twenty-first century, Americans became aware of the extraordinary beauty and natural resources in and around the Ely area, making it an ideal travel destination for people seeking an opportunity to truly immerse themselves in the remote, rugged beauty of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Be sure to check into obtaining a permit before entering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness because permits are required for even the shortest of daytrips. Depending on the type of permit you are seeking, you may be able to obtain a self-issued permit at one of the gateways to the park itself.
Other Ely area attractions include the Vermilion Interpretive Center, the Tower/Soudan Underground Mine and the Ely Arts and Heritage Canter at Pioneer Mine. In 1986, the last resident of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area passed away; Dorothy Molter's hospitality was legendary among visitors to this region, especially her homemade root beer. Explore her legacy at the Dorothy Molter Museum where her two cabins were relocated to Ely after her death. Care to take a break from learning about the history and culture of the Ely region? Why not schedule a round of golf at one of the area golf courses. For those looking for a little shopping therapy, the downtown Ely district offers many quaint shops filled with souvenirs and artisanal crafts. Or, simply get away from it all with a leisurely hike, snow-mobile ride, or cross country ski trip on one of the many area trails such as the Taconite Trail and the Tomahawk Trail. Also, the Blueberry Festival isn't the only festival in town. Be sure to check out the Fall Harvest Moon Festival, the Ely Winter Festival, the Embarrass Region Fair and the Wolf Track Classic Dog Sled Race if you should happen to be in the area while any of these wonderful events are scheduled. In the fall and winter, be sure to check out the night skies for a glimpse at the Northern Lights. Viewing them on the edge of a lake is perhaps the best way to view them. Other local cultural venues include the Bois Forte Heritage Center and Cultural Museum at Fortune Bay Casino where visitors can view the handiwork of Objiwe craftsmen and explore recreated homes and other Native American buildings.
Ely is not only a great place to visit for shorter trips or weekend getaways; Ely is also a great spot to live. Ely offers its residents world class medical care, a solid jobs economy and great public schools, all enhancing the quality of life here in Ely. Vacation homes and cabins here in the Ely area are sure to offer any amenity your heart might desire. Lakefront lots are available for those seeking the chance to construct their very own dream property in the heart of the Minnesotan North Woods. For peace, solitude, culture, and history all set against the backdrop of some remarkable scenery, Ely is the perfect choice. Why not plan a visit today?
